Watercolor Map of Bethesda Maryland for Real Estate Developer

The ad agency for a Maryland based real estate developer contacted Randal Birkey as the result of a web search. The agency required a map of the downtown area of Bethesda, Maryland, on which to locate many area amenities for a print brochure on a proposed new high-rise condominium project.

Randal created this digital watercolor map using aerial photography as a reference point. He used an Apple Macintosh computer running a software program called Painter (now a Corel product). Digital “Watercolor brushes” were controlled using a Wacom tablet connected to Randal’s computer. The final files were formatted and prepared in Adobe Photoshop, and delivered to the customer via email.

This is a sample of a street map of downtown Chicago highlighting the address, style and location of an office building at 333 W. Wacker Dr. It also happens to be the location of Randal’s Chicago Web Design company, founded in 2007. This map was created for use on that company’s website.

Rand McNally CityFlash Map Products

Randal Birkey produced 5 CityFlash maps using Adobe Illustrator and Aldus Freehand on Apple Macintosh computers. The cities included:

  • Chicago
  • Washington DC
  • San Francisco
  • New York
  • Boston

Rand McNally provided Randal with reference maps which were used as base maps. Randal developed the color palettes, line weights and various cartographic symbols based upon the existing Hallwag CityFlash maps. The resulting Postscript™ map files were delivered to Rand McNally and used for four-color direct output to high-resolution film, and printing plates, used to 4 color offset print the final map products. The Rand McNally CityFlash map product line is still available today in map and book stores.
