Randal was retained by a real estate development company in Chicago called Walsh-Higgins, to render a proposed office building to be located next to the Walgreens headquarters in the northern suburbs of Chicago. The architectural design blueprint drawings were provided. Randal first created a 3D wirefame model of the building on his Mac using a 3D modeling software. The final perspective view was transferred to watercolor board and then inked by hand using sepia ink in Rapidograph pens. The final step was to add Windsor & Newton watercolor washes to the bring out color, forms, tone and texture. The finished art was 20 x 30 inches, and was drum scanned for 4-color offset printing plates and reproduction.

Kingsbury Place Chicago
Randal was contracted by a graphic design firm in the 1980′s to create this architectural illustration. The design firm was commissioned by the building developer to design printed materials to attract an anchor tenant to a new commercial office/retail building in Chicago’s River North area. This building is still located at the northwest corner of Kingsbury and Orleans.
Randal worked from the architectural blueprint drawings to create a 3D perspective wireframe model of the building. Once a viewpoint was agreed upon (looking northwest from across the street on Orleans), the linework was transferred from the 3D software, into 2D vector software like Adobe Illustrator. After cleanup and final linework was completed there, it was printed with a large format digital plotter on rough drawing paper.
Randal finished the illustration by adding the color, values and textures using color pencils by hand. The 20″ x 30″ artwork was then drum scanned and inserted into the designer layouts and printed in 4-color offset printing process.
Several smaller detail illustrations were done as a part of this project in the same manner and style: a closeup of the building entrance, and the main lobby.
The intended goal was reached… the final printed piece and their marketing efforts landed an anchor tenant!
Location Maps
Office Building Location Map
Randal has created many location maps for use on client websites, or in corporate communication pieces and presentations. This is a sample of a street map of downtown Chicago highlighting the address, style and location of an office building at 333 W. Wacker Dr. It also happens to be the location of Randal’s Chicago Web Design company, founded in 2007. This map was created for use on that company’s website.
This illustration was created by Randal using Adobe Illustrator software on an Apple Macintosh using a Wacom tablet.
American Invsco – Delaware Place – Chicago, Illinois
OBJECTIVE
A leading US condominium developer, American Invsco, required a marketing map and new condo building illustration of a new development in Chicago called Delaware Place.
SOLUTION
Randal Birkey created a street level detail map of the neighborhood around the development, highlighting amenities and proximity to shopping, recreation and transportation.
Randal also created a street level view perspective of the high-rise condo building in a similar line and watercolor style used for the map for continuity and consistency.
The illustrations were created digitally using Painter and Adobe Photoshop software on an Apple Macintosh, also using a Wacom tablet. The final files were delivered to the client via a Birkey.com FileSharing site.
